Two potent music-based Web sites, JAMTV.com and rollingstone.com, will merge to create the Rolling Stone Network, the most comprehensive music site on the Internet featuring nightly live and archival performances as well as feature articles and reviews.
In the new site, JAMTV will utilize its capabilities to broadcast live con-certs from venues nationwide, daily video news webcasts and special events. The site will also offer awards shows, festivals and chat sessions.
The network, which is expected to be functional by the first quarter of 1998, will tap Rolling Stone’s well-established editorial content to provide the site with multimedia-enhanced feature stories, album reviews and photographs, as well as 30 years of archival material. The network will also permit consumers to purchase CDs and tour merchandise from its online warehouse.
“It’s a powerful combination,” said Jerry Mickelson, chairman of JAMTV and one of the co-founders of JAM Prods., the Midwest’s largest concert promoter for the past 25 years. “Our lifetime relationships with bands and our promotion and production back-ground combined with Rolling Stone’s unique way of viewing the world through the prism of rock ‘n’ roll makes for a one-of-a-kind consumer music source.”
JAMTV, which bills itself as the Web’s largest aggregation of multi-media assets and artist information, will continue to supply syndicated music content and live events to its radio station affiliates.
“By joining forces with JAMTV, Rolling Stone will now occupy a pre-eminent position on the Web,” said Jann S. Wenner, editor in chief and publisher of Rolling Stone. “JAMTV’s capabilities, combined with our edito-rial expertise, will make the Rolling Stone Network the ultimate source for music lovers.”
The magazine will be responsible for the news and editorial content; JAMTV will provide the technology, additional content and performance photography, webcasts, site support and infrastructure.
In related news, JAMTV has inked clothing manufacturer Gap to co-sponsor its “Live Lounge,” a co-production with Ticketmaster Online to offer nightly entertainment from a diverse contingent of artists, such as Ani DiFranco, Jamiroquai and U2, among others.
Consumers can also purchase clothing through the Web site.
