‘Casper’ scares up first direct-to-vid soundtrack

Backstreet Boys, Oingo Boingo and Casper?

EMI/Capitol Entertainment Properties and Saban Records have teamed to create what is being billed as the industry’s first soundtrack created for a direct-to-video film, “Casper, A Spirited Beginning.”

The soundtrack to the live-action, animated feature is also the first such offering from the newly formed EMI/Capitol outfit, known as E-Prop, and will boast a mixture of up-and-coming acts and superstars on a second career wind.

The disc includes a first-time collaboration between K.C. and the Sunshine Band and Kool and the Gang, with the two acts warbling the title track, as well as Oingo Boingo’s appropriately titled “No One Lives Forever.”

Twentieth Century Fox will distribute the Harvey Entertainment pic to more than 100,000 retail outlets next month, while E-Prop will offer special packaging on the first 200,000 discs, which will sport 3-D artwork simulating flying ghosts.

Harvey CEO-chairman Jeffrey Montgomery calls the disc “a brilliant combination of today’s best and brightest and yesterday’s favorites.”

The soundtrack also draws from up-and-comers such as Virgin Records’ 911, who have a chart-topping single, “Love Sensation,” in the U.K., and Arista Records heartthrobs Backstreet Boys, who contribute “I Wanna Be With You.”

Steve Guttenberg and Lori Loughlin star in the pic, with voiceovers provided by Pauly Shore and James Earl Jones.
