Universal Studios has laid off between 40 and 60 of its employees in its information technical support division. According to those who were laid off, about 60 people were affected, however U said 15 permanent employees and 28 independent contractors were pinkslipped for a total of 43.
The employees who contacted Daily Variety said they had known of the layoffs for the past two to three weeks, but it was rumored that only 10 positions would be affected. Employees were notified Thursday of their firings either by phone or when they came to work. One person said that they found out when they went to clock in and their time card was no longer there. Universal information technical support provides reports to all divisions on costs and revenues of the divisions.
The employees also noted that they were told that “a second sweep” would come in October, but a U spokeswoman could not confirm that, saying that “there is a constant evaluation process. There have been no decisions made. It’s minor restructuring based on a skill set adjustment that is geared to ultimately improve our information technology capabilities.”
The spokeswoman added that there may be additional hires down the road “to help build the capabilities in that area.”
