Question of character triggers suit

Claiming her religious beliefs and marriage vows prevent her from playing romantic scenes, an actress has sued the producers of “Good News,” a new United Paramount Network series, for allegedly refusing to accommodate her beliefs in the way her character is written.

In a complaint filed Thursday in L.A. Superior Court, Rose Jackson stated she is suing MTM Enterprises and Good News Prods. “to bring MTM to its senses by recognizing that it should work” with her “instead of trying to bludgeon (her) into submission.” She asserts the producers are forcing her character in the series to have a romantic relationship onscreen.

Keep it clean

Jackson has “deeply held Christian beliefs” that do not allow her to perform in any on-camera physical relationship, according to the complaint.

Central to her beliefs is the sanctity of marriage and her conviction that “it is morally wrong to engage in romantic physical activity with any man other than her spouse.”

When she took the role of Vera, a church secretary, the character was supposed to be innocent.

But after the show was picked up by UPN, the lawsuit claims, MTM allegedly decided to shift the character’s direction and Jackson was told the secretary would develop a romance with the church pastor.

“This turn deeply troubled Ms. Jackson,” the lawsuit said, adding that she told MTM she couldn’t perform in any on-camera physical romance.

The suit alleged MTM responded to Jackson’s refusal by saying, “She will not only lose the part, but both she and her husband (Michael Moye) would be sued for millions of dollars.”

Work it out

Notwithstanding MTM’s threats, Jackson said she would like to find a way to accommodate her desire to work for MTM as an actress and her desire to uphold her religious beliefs and marriage vows.

“In a new family-oriented television series, set in a church, there simply is no good reason to force Ms. Jackson to engage in onscreen acts that are morally repugnant to her,” the lawsuit states.

Attorneys for MTM could not be reached for comment.
