Planet H’w’d gains Kiwi foothold

AUCKLAND — Planet Hollywood is coming to the furthermost reaches of its galaxy — Auckland, New Zealand.

The Kiwi-Australian Force Corp. announced today that Planet would be part of a $45 million, central-city entertainment center with a 12-screen multiplex and a giant Imax cinema — the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Construction will start shortly, with completion expected in 1999.

Force Corp. chairman Peter Francis said the six-level center was expected to attract more than 3 million visitors a year, and would help revitalize the city center.

Included in the overall plan is the restoration of several old cinemas close to the proposed site for the center. Force currently operates 46 screens throughout the country.
