The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation revealed Wednesday that this fall’s network primetime lineup includes a record-busting 30 characters who are openly gay, lesbian or bisexual — a 23% increase over last fall’s 23.
Four new gay characters arrive this fall: on ABC’s “Total Security” (Bill Brochtrup plays a gay receptionist), NBC’s “Veronica’s Closet” (portrayed by “The Larry Sanders Show’s” Wallace Langham), on UPN’s “Head Over Heels” (Patrick Bristow plays a celibate bisexual) and on Fox’s “413 Hope St.” (Karime Prince plays an HIV-positive gay youth).
Chastity Bono, GLAAD’s entertainment director, applauded TV for being “at the forefront” of inclusive gay characterizations.
