Do-gooder duo shuns spotlight

On second thought …

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito had been announced as recipients of Women in Film’s Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award. But now the couple has decided to “withdraw their acceptance” of the honor.

Instead, Rob and Michele Reiner will get the do-gooder kudos at the June 13 Crystal Awards luncheon at the Century Plaza Hotel.

The Reiners have been involved in numerous efforts on behalf of children.

Perlman and DeVito wrote WIF on May 29 — a week after the announcement — to say that although they were honored to be chosen, they realized their charitable work “has never been, and should never be, the focus of public attention.”

The couple’s spokesman told Daily Variety that while the pair regularly receives offers of such honors, their policy has always been to avoid publicity for their good works.

“At first they felt they would make an exception since WIF is such a good organization, and because the event was a low-key luncheon and not televised,” said the spokesman. “But after they accepted it and it was in print they thought it over and realized they weren’t comfortable. Women in Film were extremely gracious about it.”
