Douglases save coastal land

GOOD MORNING: Like father, like son — on the occasion of Kirk Douglas’ 80th birthday, son Michael donated the final $600,000 needed to acquire the threatened 70 acres of coastal bluff known as the Wilcox property in Santa Barbara county (where Michael has a home). The Trust for Public Land agreed that the reserve will be named the Douglas Family Preserve. Anne and Kirk’s charitable contributions include sizable contributions to the Motion Picture and TV Country House and Hospital and a shelter for the homeless in downtown L.A. Kirk was toasted Monday night at the birthday party given by his wife Anne at L’Orangerie for 128 Douglas family members and close friends — some winging in from France and N.Y. Michael arrived at the party directly from the set of “The Game” in which he plays a wealthy San Franciscan. Sunday night, NBC aired Kirk’s 1994 Imagine pic “Greedy” — in which he plays a wealthy patriarch. Kirk’s pic was a comedy, Michael’s is a psychological thriller … Antonio Banderas takes a break from fancy fencing lessons for “The Mask of Zorro,” to wing up from Mexico City Wednesday to attend the “Evita” preem here Saturday at the Shrine, then on to N.Y. and London. “Zorro” does not start principal photography until Jan. 27 but the preparations are as intricate as those for “Evita.” Melanie Griffith, who has been in Mexico with Banderas (she was on his “Evita” locations as well) returns here to shoot Revlon commercials. As for questions of Banderas’ excellence with the epee, fencing master Bob Anderson (73) who is sharpening up Banderas, tells me, “He is the best swordsman I have ever worked with.” And he’s taught ’em all from Errol Flynn in “The Master of Ballantrae” (1953), to Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Peter O’Toole, Tony Curtis — and Anderson, himself, dueled from inside the Darth Vader suit. He’ll later be giving pointers to Anthony Hopkins as the older “Zorro” who escapes from 20 years in prison.

MARVIN DAVIS AMAZED his family and friends — and continues to do so. He was hospitalized last Friday for “a procedure” involving his heart, but Saturday he proudly escorted daughter Dana down the aisle at her beautiful wedding to Asher Lipman at the Davises’ home. And Monday, at 8 ayem, Marvin was at his Century City office, his son John told me, and tomorrow, Marvin wings to St. Louis for his riverboat casino biz. John Davis is off to cruise aboard the S.S. Rotterdam, Sunday — but it’s for the final five days of “Out to Sea” starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. John, of course, skipped Lemmon’s Kennedy Center Honors to be at his sister’s wedding. The ceremony was held in an enormous see-through tented garden and the dinner party which followed was in a second, even larger giant tent draped in white with thousands of red roses cascading from the top, in planters and centerpieces on the tables and more roses — as souvenirs — tucked behind the organdy-covered dinner chairs! Barbara Davis who was anxiously watching Marvin as he made his way down the aisle with daughter Dana, relaxed and smiled as the wedding service and evening progressed. She wore a spectacular white Vera Wang gown and the beautiful bride and her 14 pretty bridesmaids were also in white Wang creations. For all those who know the life story of the bride and the family, it was a particularly emotional evening. Friends, including studio executives on hand included Michael Eisner, Michael Ovtiz, Sherry Lansing, Bob Daly, Jonathan Dolgen, Richard Zanuck, Mo Ostin, Alan Ladd Jr., Ivan Reitman, Howard Weitzman, Al Ruddy; also Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and of course, the Davis family’s friend, Don Rickles. But pal Bob Newhart was unable to attend, he’s shooting on the illnesses-delayed “In and Out” in N.Y. said wife Ginnie. Among guests, Irwin Winkler was on crutches — a golf cart pinned down his leg. Tony Danza shook up a few legs as he led a long conga line around the tent. Natalie Cole, also a regular at the Davis doings, sang for the bride and groom. And Murray Korda’s Monsigneur Strings (22), on the stairway in the great hall, serenaded the guests as they arrived from one tent en route to the next — with a lengthy stop in the dining room for hors d’oeuvres, caviar, sturgeon, stone crab, and smoked salmon personally slivered by Wolfgang Puck, who catered. On departing, guests were given boxed miniatures of the tiered wedding cake as Chuck Pick’s parking armada whisked cars up and away with nary a moment’s delay.

I’M THE NEW SPRING BYINGTON,” said Debbie Reynolds, bubbling over after the preem of “Mother” at Par’s main theater. She had just winged in from the N.Y. location of her second pic in a row, (after a 27-year screen absence!) “In And Out.” Debbie brought her mom Maxene to the “Mother” preem, and Albert Brooks, brought his mother, Thelma Einstein. Both moms were equally as excited as their offspring. Mrs. Einstein, widow of “Parkyakarkus,” (Harry Einstein) told me she had tried to discourage her son from going into showbiz! Debbie will be back at her Las Vegas hotel to play the New Year’s Eve show — “and the rest of the new year.” But Herb Nanas, who manages Debbie, with Jeff Wald, as well as Albert Brooks (he also produced “Mother” with Scott Rudin), says there are many film offers for her as a result of “Mother.” Also there congratting Reynolds and Brooks were Richard Dreyfuss and Garry Shandling. Latter’s winding his (terrif!) TV season (two segs to go) and will then work on the script of his feature, “What Planet Are You From?”
