Nick at Nite’s TV Land cablenet has boosted its subscriber base to 15 million, some 3 million more homes than the MTV Networks nostalgia channel had targeted for 1996 when it launched in April.
The 15 million mark was reached after TV Land signed affiliation deals with Time Warner Inc., Continental Cablevision, Cox Communications, satcaster PrimeStar Partners, Jones Intercable, Intermedia Partners and Prime Cable.
Positioned as a Nick at Nite spinoff, TV Land boasts reruns of such classic network shows as “Mannix,” “St. Elsewhere,” “The Addams Family” and “The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” while bridging the programming with a lineup of oldtime ads that it calls “retromercials.”
The channel carries no conventional advertising as yet and offered cable systems five years of carriage free of licensing fees at launch.
It has marketed itself aggressively to cable consumers in the hope that they will bombard multiple system operators with demands that it be added to system lineups.
