A plaque is scheduled to be installed at 10 this morning at 5600 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood to commemorate the site of the first meeting 50 years ago of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The original ATAS was founded Nov. 16, 1946, by Syd Cassyd, who was at the time a reporter for a TV trade magazine. At the site of the Academy’s early meetings, a Home Depot store now resides. Today, ATAS, with its own modern complex in North Hollywood, has nearly 9,000 members.
Johnny Grant, chairman of the Hollywood Historical Trust, serves as emcee today for the official unveiling of the plaque, with radio/TV veteran Gary Owens also participating.
