MCI axes call-in CD service

MCI has pulled the plug on its 1-800-Music Now service citing a lack of consumer interest in the telephone and online compact disc ordering service.

MCI was hoping the service, which allowed callers to hear snippets of more than 5,000 songs, order CDs and have them delivered, would be its entree into the $12 billion-a-year music business.

But a lack of repeat customers and buyers who made only single disc purchases were cited by MCI execs as the chief reasons for disconnecting the year-old service.

The long-distance telephone carrier is said to have spent more than $8 million to launch the venture in November 1995.
