Fries, Berg to fly Leonard’s ‘Flag’

Producers Chuck Fries and Dick Berg will be bringing novelist Elmore Leonard’s original screenplay “American Flag” to the bigscreen. Among his more than 30 novels, Leonard has had “Get Shorty, “Fifty-Two Pick-Up” and “Hombre” turned into feature films. Helmer Paul Schrader has just wrapped Leonard’s “Touch” for Lumiere.

Originally developed at First Artists as a star vehicle for Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Ali McGraw, “American Flag” is an action/romance set in silver mining country at the turn of the century.

Berg is producer with Alan Marcil on the recently wrapped film adaptation of Leonard’s “Pronto” for Showtime, helmed by Jim McBride and starring Peter Falk, Glenne Headly and James LeGros.

Berg and Fries were previously teamed on several projects including the MOW sequel to “High Noon.”

The current project is being packaged by Leonard’s agent Michael Siegel at Creative Artists Agency.
