Discovery Asia taps Herman as director

TOKYO – Discovery Asia, a subsidiary of Discovery Communications, has appointed Steven L. Herman as director of channel operations and programming in Japan.

Discovery Channel Japan, which will have its official launch Jan. 20, will be a joint venture between Discovery Asia and Jupiter Programming. Jupiter itself is a joint venture of TCI and the major Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp.

The Discovery Channel will air regular subtitled programming 24 hours a day starting late next month on the satellite broadcaster PerfecTV.

“The Discovery Channel will also be available to cable systems within a short period,” Herman said.

Herman, 37, heads Tokyo-based Globe Net Productions, a broadcast video production company and media consulting firm. He worked for several years at Associated Press in the U.S. and has been a reporter for CBS radio in Japan. He also worked as a producer and reporter for NHK’s weekly TV program “Asia Now.”
