Chile cracks down on cable pirates

SANTIAGO, Chile – Eight people have been indicted for setting up illegal cable TV connections and could face jail terms of as long as five years.

Jorge Navarrete, VTR Hipercable’s executive director, stated that his company and Metropolis-Intercom, which together control the Santiago Metro cable market, estimate pirated cable hookups could be in as many as 150,000 homes, close to 25% of Santiago Metro’s subscribers.

The piracy could mean an estimated monthly loss of as much as $3 million to the two MSOs. A campaign is under way to increase public awareness of the problem.
