Buena Vista Intl. announced Thursday that its international box office had exceeded $1 billion effective Dec. 18. It marks the second consecutive year that Disney’s international B.O. has surpassed that mark, the company said.
For the calendar year, “The Rock” has been the individual top-performing title, grossing $194.5 million outside the domestic marketplace. Also topping $100 million are “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” currently at $139.8 million and expected to reach $200 million, and “Toy Story,” which grossed $159.8 million of its $166.4 million cume since Jan. 1.
Other significant overseas performers for BVI include “Dangerous Minds” with $84 million, the spoof “Spy Hard” at $57.2 million, “Phenomenon” at $44.3 million and “The Postman” (Il Postino), which had a B.O. of $40 million in territories where the company distributed.
BVI has traditionally been a bridesmaid in international market share to Warner Bros. The closing weeks of 1996 promise again to provide a close race between the rival companies.
