Theater loop set to bow Arrabida 20 in Portugal

As part of its global expansion, AMC Entertainment Inc. announced that its first megaplex in Europe, the AMC Arrabida 20, will open Dec. 20 in Porto, Portugal.

Located in an upscale shopping and entertainment center in the residential area of Villanova de Gaia in South Porto, the 20-screen, 4,253-seat site will be the largest theater complex in Portugal.

Striving for excitement

“Given the universal appeal of moviegoing and the immense popularity of AMC’s megaplex concept, we believe patrons will find our new entertainment experience exciting and enjoyable,” said Phillip M. Singleton, AMC’s executive VP and chief operating officer.

The Arrabida 20 is equipped with stadium-style seating that includes high-back seats with headrests, retractable armrests with cupholders, as well as AMC’s exclusive loveseat-style seats with double-wide, cushioned and retractable cupholder armrest.

The megaplex also features AMC’s signature 46-inch wide rows between seats; Sony digital sound systems; and wall-to-wall movie screens in every theater.

Six auditoriums will have AMC’s High Impact Theatre System with the Torus compound-curved screens, for enhanced picture clarity.

The theater’s two full-size concession stands will sell American-style concessions including popcorn, hot dogs, nachos, candy and soft drinks.

The AMC Arrabida 20 is AMC’s second overseas project. In April, the company opened a 13-screen multiplex in Fukuoka, Japan. AMC plans to expand into several Asian, European and South American markets.
