Goode Behavior

Filmed in Los Angeles by Seven Mile Prods. in association with UPN. Executive producers, Brian Pollack, Mert Rich; co-executive producer, Robert Illes; producers, Dennis Pollack, Ken Johnston, Al Lowenstein; writers, Rich, Pollack, Dennis Pollack, Illes; director, Jack Shea; director of photography, George Spiro Dibie; art director, Dahl Delu; editor, Robert Souders; sound, Steve Anderson; music, Steve Dorff. Cast: Sherman Hemsley, Dorien Wilson, Alex Datcher , Bianca Lawson, Scott Grimes, Joseph Maher, Zoaunne LeRoy, Weston Blakesley, Bernard Hocke. The occasional funny sight-gag and well-delivered one-liner will likely not be enough to make this sitcom worth tuning in to. While initial viewer response may be due to a curiosity to see what George Jefferson has been up to over the past two decades, the sheer dopiness of the effort may get show instead of its main character placed under house arrest. Series opener centers on the reunion of Franklin (Dorien Wilson) and William (Sherman Hemsley) Goode. The former is an about-to-be dean of humanities while the latter is a convicted con-man serving out his parole under house arrest at the good deans abode. Naturally, hijinx ensue when the con-man is introduced to the college bigwigs, including the schools chancellor (Joseph Maher), and Willie is suspected of working his conning ways as part of an effort to get his son a lock on the job. Writers Mert Rich, Brian Pollack, Robert Illes and Dennis Pollack have endeavored to give Hemsley a chance to work his George Jefferson persona into the program, but it seems dated in todays TV marketplace. The interaction between Franklin and his wife (Alex Dutcher) is less histrionic than most similarly designed sitcoms, with an occasional round of reasonable behavior striking the characters. But director Jack Shea seemingly gives his cast too much freedom, as some encounters most notably the ones between Hemsleys and Mahers characters seem cartoonish even for a UPN comedy offering.
