Vintage Army: Aug. 5, 1955

Army Archerd will not be writing a Monday column (or, in today’s case, one for Tuesday) this summer; instead, he has selected vintage columns from approximately the same date in the past 42 years. The Aug. 5, 1955, report runs today.

GOOD MORNING: Dolores Del Rio has a date in Washington in Oct. to find out who tried to put the Commie-tint on her and kept her out of 20th’s “Broken Lance.” Del Rio received a visa to return to the U.S. three months ago … The Jackie Coopers expect their first-born in February, and he’ll be a native Californian, sez Cooper, here to start his “The People’s Choice” teleseries … The Milton Berles arrived in town, opened their suitcases, changed clothes and hopped over to Ciro’s with Jerry and Patti Lewis, and the Frank Loessers. Also in the audience were the Red Skeltons and Herb Shriner. It looked like a comics’ convention! The Berles have a one-year lease on the BevHills house … Ethel Merman and Bob Six checked into the BevHills Hotel. But she sez she’s here strictly for the ride while Bob attends to Continental Airlines bizness. La Merman wings to Europe with hubby on Sept. 3. Don’t be surprised if she signs for a set of Spectaculars, however, during this week’s visit … Bob Hope’s homeward bound Aug. 12 … Shavelson and Rose, en route to Rome, hope to snare Hope and Milly Vitale (now in “War and Peace”) for an Italian preeming of “Seven Little Foys”… John Huston ventures forth from his Irish castle next month for a fast trip to N.Y. and L.A. — to help sell “Moby Dick,” of course … Since the announcement of the “J.R. Grainger Sales Drive,” RKO’s sales force received over 1,200 wires from exhibs pledging support … Sam Goldwyn’s “Guys and Dolls” yesterday jolted the Metro exec and exhib contingent into unrestrained raves.

ATTENTION MARLON BRANDO: Gary Cooper’s gonna warble a coupla ditties in “Mr. Birdwell Goes to Battle.” Everybody’s gettin’ into the act! … Margaret Ettinger chose Dolores Del Rio’s birthday, Wednesday, to toss her a cocktail party. Among the glamour gals of yesterday’s screen attending were Mary Brian and Marion Davies. Father Tom English, Carmen Figueroa and Alfredo de la Vega squired Del Rio to La Rue’s. She’ll be here two more weeks … Jacqueline Holt, Nat’s purty dotter, fresh from summer stock, is here for a screen career. But she won’t work for her pappy. She can’t ride hosses! … John Conte and bride Ruth arrive Sunday … Tom Helmore completed “Tender Trap” and springs to N.Y. to start rehearsals in “Debut,” written by his wife, Mary Drayton. Marjorie Steele has the femme lead … The Frank Lovejoys badly broken up yesterday when their miniature Schnauzer was killed by a hit-and-run driver … Janet Leigh’s momma goes along with dotter on “Safari!” trek to Africa.

THE PRESS: Abe Weiler, film editor of the N.Y. Times, arrives today and will houseguest with the Dave Goldings … Betcha Hillcrest and Lakeside are flooded with copies of Life — containing Ben Hogan’s secret grip. And it’s really a secret! … Wall Street Journal’s David Kenyon Webster quotes Jake Kozloff: “I have a feeling that a man may be able to get a good buy on a ‘strip’ hotel this winter.” Article says Vegas has reached saturation point … Dick Hubler’s two-part profile on Roz Russell breaks in the SatEvePost Sept. 3 … Press preview of “The Virgin Queen” brought socko reaction and queries about a sequel! “Son of the Virgin Queen”? … George Hearst is home from St. John’s Hospital, where he was switched from Henderson, Nevada … Spike Jones was caught in the Riviera’s revolving stage in an opening night miscue. And little Billy Barty was tossed off-stage, almost into the lap of Henry J. Kaiser, who had winged in (on his own DC-6) from N.Y. for the show … Howard Keel bounced up to the Dunes last night to case the room before his November date … Vittorio Gassman’s first night in town, stag at the Encore, where Jeri Southern continues to draw a huge music crowd. She sings the song, man.

THE SONG’S NOT ENDED: Mary Murphy, who supposedly phfft with Dale Robertson, is a daily visitor on his “Day of Fury” set … Lili Darvas is anxious to meet Grace Kelly. She’s the widow of “Swan” author Ferenc Molnar, and has played the role many times in Europe … The Ray Bradburys welcomed their third girl, Bettina … And the Montgomery Pittmans are expecting in December. He authored “Come Next Spring.” Sherry Jackson (on the Danny Thomas show) is their big girl … Brooks West gifted Eve Arden with a station wagon on their fourth wedding anni … The Ken Curtises (Barbara Ford) are buying a big motel in Flagstaff and will commute to town for pix only … Charlton Heston told his MCAgent Herman Citron: “Who needs you — I got my newborn son a job, plus a chauffeur and a nursemaid, in ‘Ten Commandments.’ “”Yeah,” said Citron, “but if we handled the deal he’d get BILLING!”
