Spielberg notes may stay in altered ‘HIStory’

GOOD MORNING: Michael Jackson, who was to have recorded new lyrics last week to “They Don’t Care About Us” in the “HIStory” album, now says it will be done “sometime this week.” The question of whether the new album’s liner notes will include Steven Spielberg’s letter (originally written in ’93 for a retrospective album of Jackson’s past work) has not been determined. However, Spielberg has not asked for his notes to be removed if the lyrics are changed, as revealed in my column of June 22 when Michael called me to say he had “made a mistake” and would change them … Marlon Brando, who leaves today for Ireland to play a priest in “Divine Rapture” with Debra Winger, Johnny Depp and John Hurt, tells me the movie is “very funny.” That’s quite an admission for Brando who, as you know, delights in downplaying any role and any movie in which he appears. And he still says he doesn’t see any of his movies –“except if they come up on my TV screen.” However, he is delighted to be working again with Depp, reminding how well they got along on “Don Juan de Marco” (which Brando also did not see, he claims); Brando notes, “This kid could play Hamlet.” Depp works only three weeks in “Rapture,” playing a reporter; he, too, admits he is “excited to see him (Brando) again.” Immediately after the Ireland stand, Brando is skedded to wing to Australia for “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” for which Val Kilmer and Wesley Snipes are talked to co-star. When I told Brando this should be a very interesting movie, he realistically said, “You never know till they buy the tickets.” Brando says he is feeling well and has been spending his time since “Don Juan” painting — via his computer (!) — and he says he is heavily involved with the Planetary Design Corp., which desalinizes seawater. Units are already in operation in Mexico and India, next is Pakistan and then he hopes, the Middle East. He says it’s tough to try and sell the environment — until it makes a profit.

EVA GABOR’S WILL PROVIDES distribution of her estate to her two sisters, Magda and Zsa Zsa and the latter’s daughter Francesca (Hilton). Also bequeathed are the three daughters of former husband Frank Jameson’s two daughters, Joanne and Mary. And also to Camille Bellinger, Eva’s assistant, secretary and traveling companion of 20 years. The very “healthy” will includes a tribute to Gabor’s “best friend,” Ray Katz, her manager of 38 years. Katz and Gabor had taken each other out (monetarily) of their respective wills, both agreeing in advance they were well off and not in need of financial remembrance. They considered each other as “brother and sister,” said a saddened Katz. A mass will be said Tuesday (July 11) at the Beverly Hills Church of Good Shepherd at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers (which Eva loved), she also noted contributions could be made to the Anne (Mrs. Kirk) Douglas Center of the L.A. Mission … Lana Turner’s daughter Cheryl Crane told me her mom was “adamant” that there be no services for her. Lana, too, had made all provisions in a very business-like manner well in advance of the inevitable — for us all … Also sad to report that Italy’s colorful and creative TV and concert producer Pier Quinto Carriaggi died following a stroke in Milan. He had produced five “Viva Hollywood” specials for European TV. They boasted the creme de la creme of Hollywood stardom. He loved Americans and American movies — and it was reflected in the joie de vivre of this exuberant Italian at all his showbiz events … Ruda Dauphin, U.S. director of the Deauville Film Fest (Sept. 1-10), has already set Clint Eastwood and “The Bridges of Madison County” for the first weekend. (Mebbe Meryl Streep will wing over also.) Eastwood loves Deauville — this is his third trek. Kevin Costner will cross the pond for his “Waterworld” French bow, and the “Apollo 13” trio of Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Ron Howard will land on the French shore. This year’s fest theme is “N.Y. in Film” and Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro of “New York, New York” are expected. The French Cinematheque is lining up Gotham-sited pix.

“A LOVING GENTLEMAN,” Meta Carpenter Wilde’s book (written with Orin Borsten) about a Hollywood “script girl” (Meta) for Howard Hawks and her tempestuous 18 -year-long love affair with William Faulkner will be produced by Just Betzer at 20th Fox from a screenplay by Thom Thomas … The story of Chicago heiress Helen Voorhees Brach’s 1977 disappearance and last month’s conviction of her murderer, Richard Bailey, is already in script form by writer Mel Scott and Byron Roberts, Bernie Weitzman and Scott will produce the yarn … President Clinton donned a yarmulke as he and wife Hillary were in attendance in Miami for the bris prayers performed by producer Zev Braun for Zachary Boxer Rodham, newborn son of Tony Rodham (Hillary’s brother) and Nicole Boxer R. (Barbara Boxer’s daughter). Producer Braun’s a close pal of the new senator-grandmother. Braun’s just back from Greece prepping “Alexander the Great,” a four-hour mini for Turner to be directed by Irvin Kershner.
