GOOD MORNING: Michael Viner’s Dove Publishing has purchased the Writers Guild building, 22,000 square feet, for $ 2.5 million to house its book and audio publishing and upcoming video and feature divisions. Adding to Dove’s coffers is the upcoming “Private Diary of an O.J. Juror” (Michael Knox), which gets (rare) serialization by People magazine … The “Spelling” category on “Jeopardy!” referred to Aaron Spelling, who said, “I finally achieved fame!” Then he worried no one would guess questions about him! Not to worry, every statement (including the “Daily Double”) found its correct query from the contestants, who proved to be informed fans of Spelling’s many shows … Today’s the first anniversary of the death of Henry Mancini, and wife Ginny winged to Minneapolis for tonight’s “Doc Severinsen-Henry Mancini and the Movies” concert, in which Monica Mancini sings. The Mancinis are also there for the bow of “Victor/Victoria,” tuned by Hank and Leslie Bricusse — the show winds its tryout Sunday, heading to N.Y. for two weeks of rehearsals before another out-of-towner in Chicago pre-B’way Oct. 25 at the Marquis. Blake Edwards and Tony Adams will also be at the concert , although Blake’s also working daily on rewrites for the show. But, Adams says, “He’s having the most fun he’s ever had with the immediate reaction you get in the theater — something for which you have to wait months on a movie. He’s acting like a new kid on B’way”– Edwards, the “new kid,” is 72 … Pickfair, the setting for some of Hollywood’s most glamorous parties, will be the site for TV Guide’s fall preview shoots from July 10 to mid-August. Pickfair owner Meshulam Riklis has redone the Mary Pickford-Douglas Fairbanks showplace and rented it to TV Guide for its biggest preview issue, this one including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and UPN and WB nets.

ODD COUPLE: Directors Clint Eastwood and John Waters were swapping stories in a Middletown, Conn., hotel bar for hours, following the 10th anni of Wesleyan’s Cinema Archives. The helmers donated their papers, etc., to the U. The duo, plus Martin Scorsese, had earlier participated in a seminar (moderated by Daily Variety’s Todd McCarthy). In talking about the days of Bogart, Gary Cooper, etc., Clint admitted those stars would never have had an opportunity to direct — because of the number of films they starred in annually. And Scorsese admitted he didn’t think he would have been able to shift from one type of pic to another , several a year, as did the contract directors of the halcyon days of the ’40s studio system. They paid tribute to those versatile talents. Also in attendance for the celebration at the archives founded by Jeanine Basinger was Isabella Rossellini (briefly married to Scorsese). She contributed her mother Ingrid Bergman’s papers to the archives. Rossellini’s current beau, Gary Oldman, accompanied Isabella. Also there, Robert Vaughn. The accomplished trio of directors rebuked Bob Dole for his anti-Hollywood remarks. Eastwood, who has supported some GOP presidential candidates in the past, said Dole’s remarks were “just politics.” Waters laughed, “I wished he picked on one of my movies.”

SUDDEN ADDITION OF MIDNIGHT SCREENINGS of “Batman” Thursday should make this the biggest box office weekend of the year — and it’s only the beginning of what’s to come by month’s end, with “Apollo 13” and “Judge Dredd” upcoming … The death of Steve Silver is a sad loss to the creative community. I had spoken to him last month when, despite his illness, he cheerily spoke of daily plans for cleverly outrageous comedy additions to his S.F. “Beach Blanket Babylon.” Thursday’s performance is canceled, and services will be held that 11:30 ayem at Grace Cathedral in SanFran … And a memorial will be held Thursday, 6:30 p.m., for Mike Mamakos at the Publicists Guild offices at 13949 Ventura Blvd. Eulogies will be read by Ed Asner, Henry Bollinger and Stan Rosenfield — and others who would like to participate in remembering Mamakos … Phil and Patricia Barry would like friends to know they are receiving on Thursday at Gates, Kingsley & Gates on behalf of Phil’s mother, Ellen Semple Barry, with contributions preferred to the John Tracy clinic … The 22nd annual Vision Award by RP Intl. toasts James Cameron, Michael Crichton, Lawrence Kasdan, Barry London, Lorne Michaels, Ridley Scott, Quentin Tarantino, Bill Allen, Barry Rosenzweig, Ken Wales, William Bell, Melissa Cornick, Bill Neighbors and Sherwood Schwartz Friday at the BevHilton. Helen Harris will reveal new plans for Theatrevision to bring movies to life to those without sight … Audrey Meadows is guest storyteller (and who better?) at today’s Motion Picture Screen Smart Set (benefits MPTV Fund) lunch at Adriano’s … And this ayem, Sherry Lansing and Sarah Purcell host the Big Sisters’ Endowment Fund Breakfast at Paramount’s commissary, awarding 10 scholarships to Woodbury U. … Frank Marshall was greeted at Chez Jay’s with a plateful of bananas. He laughed — he’s got the pic with a peel. OK, appeal.
