With the luxury of having two channels in Boston, pubcaster WGBH is planning to revamp the schedule of its UHF-er to be more than a place for repeats and statehouse proceedings. According to program director Ron Bachman, WGBX will have a new look and distinctly different programming format starting this month.

As one of the top PBS stations in the country, WGBH tries to carry the full PBS schedule. Starting Jan. 8, WGBX’s primetime 8-11 p.m. period will be programmed thematically, with Sunday nights devoted to public affairs, Monday to historical programs, Tuesday to drama, Thursday to science and Friday to nature and travel. Wednesdays and Saturdays will be “open” nights, though Saturday programming will tend toward entertainment and cultural shows. Repeats will be mixed with PBS classics as well as new shows.

“We’re going to do things that are new and exclusive to (WGBX) as often as we can,” said Bachman.
