With three-fourths of the February sweeps wrapped up, you can count the number of new strips beating their lead-in and year-ago time period averages on one hand – and still have a few free fingers.
Twentieth TV’s off-Fox series “The Simpsons” is maintaining a huge lead over the competition with an 8.5 rating/14 share in Nielsen overnight metered markets, far above its 6.2/11 lead-in and 6.1/10 year-ago mark.
Warner Bros.’ “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is also performing strong, capturing a 6.3/11. That’s a drastic improvement on its 5.1/9 lead-in and 5.0/9 slot average the previous year.
The only other freshman series – off-net or firstrun – turning in a decent showing is Worldvision’s “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Its 2.4/5 is up nearly half a rating point over its lead-in and even with its February ’94 average.
