New World Television has tapped longtime Group W Television exec John Spinola to become president and general manager of WJBK Detroit.
Spinola replaces Steve Antoniotti, who had run WJBK for the past six years. New World said Antoniotti will become a VP of station development for the group’s 12 TV stations, although the company did not say where he would be based or to whom he would report.
Spinola most recently served as VP, operations, for Group W TV in Boston. He also spent eight years as VP and general manager of Group W’s WBZ. With Group W in the process of acquiring CBS, it is unclear whether Spinola’s post will be filled there anytime soon.
New World Television has been making changes at many of its stations since they switched affiliations to Fox from the Big Three networks.
In June, WJW Cleveland’s longtime prez Virgil Dominic was bumped to the undefined post of VP, corporate special projects, at New World Television. New World also replaced the prexy of KSAZ Phoenix with Dan Berkery, and in April sacked the general managers of KTVI St. Louis, KDFW Dallas and KTBC Austin.
Executives close to New World said there has been a culture clash between general managers accustomed to running Big Three affiliates and the strategies New World wants to implement as the owner of Fox affiliates.
