DBS honcho asks to carry webs

DirecTv prexy Edward Hartenstein is urging Congress to add a proviso to pending telecommunications legislation allowing direct broadcast satellite providers to carry network TV signals.

Current law bars DBS carriers from supplying network programming unless the satellite dish owner lives in so-called rural “white areas” where network signals cannot be received.

Hartenstein, in a Sept. 13 speech before the D.C.-based Media Institute, called on lawmakers to remove the “artificial legal barrier” to DBS carriage of network signals.
