NEW CINEMAS: Several new multiplexes are being constructed in urban centers outside Manila. These new cinemas are considered a major component of hugely popular shopping malls. In ‘94,24 new movie screens (over 800 seats each) opened. For ‘95,15 new screens are planned. On a down note, several independent theaters are closing.

TOP LOCAL FILM OF 1994: “The Maggie de la Riva Story.” (Grossed approximately $2.5 million).

TOP FOREIGN FILM OF 1994: “True Lies” (U.S.). ($1-7 million.)

B.O. YEAR SUMMARY: Reliable box office figures for local films distributed by non-Hollywood majors are not widely available. According to Larry Amante, a prominent Filipino exhibitor, box office figures were down by at least 5%, but this was offset by the increase in movie prices. He attributes the slump to the deep economic crisis.
