News Ltd. Taps Rupert’s Son

Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son, Lachlan, has been elevated to the newly created job of deputy chief executive of News Ltd., making him heir apparent to News Corp.’s Australian operations.

The 24-year-old is widely tipped eventually to take over the day-to-day operation of News Ltd. from 61-year-old chief exec Ken Cowley. The young Murdoch’s meteoric rise started when he joined News Corp. in 1994 as general manager of Queensland Newspapers. He became publisher of national broadsheet the Australian in July last year and joined the News Ltd. board last September.
