IAN SUTHERLAND has been named to the new role of VP of international marketing at United Intl. Pictures, the London-based foreign distrib partnership of Paramount, Universal and MGM/UA.
Sutherland, who will report to Hy Smith, UIP exec VP, international marketing, takes up the post Oct. 1. For the past six years he has been head of marketing at UIP Australia, based in Sydney.
The VPs of international advertising, publicity and promotions will report to Sutherland.
PETER STIRLING-BENSON has been named chief executive of TV1, a pay TV entertainment channel partnership between Columbia TriStar, Paramount Pictures and Universal/MCA airing on satcaster Galaxy.
An ex-British Airways exec, Stirling-Benson replaces Peter Press, a former Viacom U.K., Europe & Asia managing director, who resigned in July saying “life was too short” to be as unchallenged as he felt at TV1.
For the first time, an Australian has the top job in Kiwi television. CHRIS ANDERSON, a former managing editor of pubcaster Australian Broadcasting Corp., pushed aside Kiwi contenders to win the post of group chief executive of TVNZ. Anderson has spent 30 years in top-level positions in newspapers, radio and television.
TVNZ chairman Norman Geary said the TVNZ board was “delighted” to get Anderson. “He is an outstanding executive with a track record of performance and achievement.”
Anderson starts in October.
Hallmark Entertainment has named JOEL DENTON senior VP and managing director of international sales. Denton, most recently director of sales for ITEL, will assume his new post later this month and will be based in London. Denton will be responsible for distribution of all Hallmark Entertainment product outside the U.S. and will direct the international sales force.
