B.O. YEAR SUMMARY: Admissions were down 19.4% in Hong Kong in ’94, continuing a decline that started in 1993. Films made locally were hit the worst, down 6.5 million admissions since 1993 – from 26.6 million to 20.1 million. Western films were fairly stable, dropping from 9.5 million admissions to 8.9 million. Despite a 15% ticket price hike, overall box office revenue dipped from $198 million to $178 million in 1994. The trend is more alarming when compared to the 1992 figures – from 41.3 million admissions two years ago, to an all-time low of 29.1 million in 1994. Cinema owners blame poor quality Hong Kong films. Movie-makers blame high ticket prices.
