Marconi Global Communications has leased a transponder on pan-Asian satellite AsiaSat 2 to broadcast one TV and one radio channel to Portuguese speaking communities in Asia.
Marconi will use the satellite capacity to broadcast RPTI, the Portuguese international TV Channel, and Antena 1,a Portuguese radio channel from Radiodifusao Portuguesa.
RPTI, operated by Portugal’s state-run broadcaster Radiotelevisao Portuguesa (RTP), will broadcast general entertainment including football matches, movies, news, documentaries and children’s programs in the Portuguese language. The service will be aimed at Portuguese expatriate communities in Australia and Japan, and the Portuguese-speaking nationals of Macau, Timor, Goa and Malacca.
AsiaSat 2 is scheduled to launch from XiChang in China in the third quarter of 1995, although the operators are waiting on a report on the launch failure of Apstar 2 from the same base before finalizing a date. The satellite carries 33 transponders, eight of which have been leased by Rupert Murdoch’s Star TV.
