Cinecanal Cashes In On Spielberg

UIP-Fox movie channel Cinecanal has paid Amblin Entertainment close to $500,000 for exclusive pay TV rights to “Schindler’s List” and “Jurassic Park,” the twin Steven Spielberg-directed hits of 1993-94.

“It’s the biggest movie investment by a Latin American programmer,” says Cinecanal marketing chief Maria Romeu.

“Schindler’s List” is set to bow Nov. 13 (9 p.m. Mexico time, 10 p.m. in the Southern Cone), while “Jurassic Park” debuts Nov. 20 (same times). Both films repeat Nov. 24.

Meanwhile, many of Cinecanal’s Mexico City staffers are packing their bags for Atlanta, which will be the web’s new base as of January. Chief reason for the move is Cinecanal’s ex pansion plan: By mid-’96, the company intends to be producing four pan-regional channels.
