Benegal finishes Gandhi film

Director Shyam Benegal is back in Bombay having completed the shoot in South Africa of “The Making of the Mahatma,” an English-lingo film that focuses on the formative political life of Mahatma Gandhi.

The film then will be premiered in the two nations co-producing it – South Africa and India- early next year.

Benegal will take time out in October to attend the Birmingham Film Festival, which is featuring a retrospective of his best-known films.

On Oct. 24, Benegal will deliver the third Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture in London on behalf of the Satyajit Ray Foundation.

The Foundation, which has ties with similar organizations in Moscow, Brussels and California, has ambitious plans to preserve all aspects of Ray’s work. It also will give awards to new filmmakers whose scripts contain the essence of Ray’s cinematic tradition.

Benegal will then deliver the highly regarded Nehru Memorial Lecture in London on Oct. 26.
