BBC To Argentina With Reconnaissance Mission

This year’s Jornadas marks the first appearance in Buenos Aires by the Beeb, as the Brits call the BBC.

Jeff Hazell, director of channel development, will be sounding out local interest in BBC World, the international cable news channel that the British pubcaster plans to bring to Latin America in first semester 1996.

“At launch the channel will be English-only. Depending on its performance, we may later introduce Spanish and Portuguese segments,” Hazell says.

A 24-hour signal, BBC World offers documentaries, plus news from the fields of sport, entertainment and fashion, as well as the BBC’s renowned global news coverage.

For a later date, the Beeb also is pondering an entertainment channel geared toward Latin American audiences.
