BBC Satellite Channels Set For B’cast

Two new BBC satellite channels will begin broadcasting Jan. 26 in Europe, one of them aimed at challenging Cable News Network’s dominance of the English-lingo news program market.

Hugh Williams, program director for British Broadcasting Worldwide TV, said the BBC had been successful with TV ventures in other parts of the world.

“But in Europe we are not a credible player,” he told a news conference last week.

The new channels are BBC Prime – a round-the-clock entertainment channel with drama, comedy, and children’s programs – and BBC World, a 24-hour global news channel.
