Arafat pulls occupied broadcast plug

PLO chairman Yasser Arafat evidently wants total control of all broadcast media in the occupied territories, as Israel eventually may cede to Palestinian self-rule.

Several applications by Palestinians to set up private commercial TV stations have been rejected by the Arafat-dominated Palestine National Authority, PNA officials said.

THe time isn’t right for such enterprises, would-be broadcasters reportedly were told.

This in effect leaves the “official” Palestine Broadcasting Corp. with a monopoly on Palestinian airwaves – and firmly under the control of Arafat.
