A Who’s Who of progressive media organizations and pundits have put together the first Media & Democracy Congress. Representatives from Fairness and Accuracy in the Media, the Nation, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Investigative Reporting and others will meet in San Francisco Feb. 29-March 3 to ponder the rapid consolidation of the media industry and how to thrive as independent voices in a rapidly changing environment. Such media pundits as Barbara Ehrenreich, Susan Faludi and Jim Hightower are helping plan the conference. “What we want to do is figure out how a bunch of diverse groups can collaborate across media lines,” says Don Hazen, director of the congress. “The idea is to strengthen independent and public-interest journalism at a time when a small handful of media giants gain more and more control of production and distribution.” Info: (415) 284-1420.
