Beastie Boys

With Ad Rock on guitar, MCA on custom standup bass and Mike D. on drums, the band soared on a succession of instrumental throwdowns that would seem to point to even more involving musical reach from the group in the near future.

Beastie Boys

(Olympic Velodrome; 10,000 capacity; $ 20)

Production: Promoted by Goldenvoice. Band: Ad Rock, MCA, Mike D., DJ Hurricane. #Reviewed June 2, 1995. The Beastie Boys' unlikely decade-plus evolution, from bratty party freaks to an exhilarating and eclectic performing troupe, was in full effect at this sold-out show as the Gotham trio impressed with nearly two hours of high-energy hip-hop, funk and punk. The Beasties -- near the end of a 30-city North American tour in support of last year's double platinum "Ill Communication"-- were in peak form throughout, tying together lively rap songs and fiery punk rave-ups with a series of old-school funk and R&B jams. Band members have improved dramatically on their instruments -- the feature that truly separates the Beasties from the flock.
