Michael Jackson plans to come to New York’s Beacon Theater on Dec.7 and Dec.8 to tape a special HBO expects to be a big night on Dec. 10. But there’s been a tussle between HBO, Jacko and Gotham over how big. HBO and Jackson wanted to put two giant Sony Jumbotron screens outside the Beacon on 74th and Broadway and fill the intersection with thousands of fans camped outside. Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s office gave it a thumbs down, because, said Gotham film commissioner Pat Scott, it would have created an uptown traffic nightmare for two nights for what’s essentially an indoor event. Though there were rumors Jackson might do the heavily promoted concert elsewhere, the sides will compromise – they’ll broadcast the concert on the permanent Sony Jumbotron in Times Square. Most importantly, the show goes on. A spokesman for Jackson said the discussions have been strictly between HBO and the city.
