Galaxy Latin America, the Hughes Communications-fronted partnership behind direct-to-home TV project DirecTV Latin America, broke ground April 20 in Long Beach, Calif., on the first of several dedicated broadcast centers it has planned.
Regional broadcast centers are skedded for Mexico City, Caracas, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires, in enough time for the early 1996 launch of the 144-channel satellite-beamed service.
Hughes’ partners in the project are the Cisneros Group (ODC), which owns Venezuelan web Venevision, and pay TV orgs Multivision of Mexico and TVA of Brazil.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the first public act of newly named Galaxy Latin America president and CEO Jose Antonio Rios. He is also corporate VP of the Cisneros Group.
