An entire town, Modinagar, takes its name from the founder of the Modi group.
Gujar Mai Modi lived in that town, from where he launched his business empire in 1933.
The cornerstone was a sugar mill, followed by diversification into textiles, soap, paints, biscuits and confectionaries.
As the company expanded into one of India’s leading industrial groups, G.M. Modi built schools, colleges and hospitals in that town as a philanthropic legacy of the Modi group.
K.K. Modi, his son and the current chairman of Modi Enterprises, was educated there.
K.K., aged 54, did an advanced management program at Harvard in 1985.
In Modinagar a whole street is decorated with banners illustrating the extent and variety of Modi’s businesses.
