Major New York theatre owners are speculating on the chances of grabbing a piece of the action following Oliver’s triumphant London bow. Cameron Mackintosh was playing a canny hand when quizzed on American plans. Speaking from LA, where he was attending the gala premiere of his production of Miss Saigon, Mackintosh said, “We are definitely interested in mounting this new production in America, but whether it opens on Broadway first will depend upon the availability of a suitable theatre. This production is as spectacular as Miss Saigon and needs a 2,000 seat house with a large stage”. Productions are also being mooted for Australia, Europe, Japan and Asia.
