Tom Werder will succeed William Chance as managing director of the Portland Stage Company following a four-week transition period after he joins the resident nonprofit theater, of which Greg Leaming is a. d., in May.

Werder started his career as a lighting designer and stage manager Off Broadway and in Australia prior to co-founding kissane Prods., a nonprofit organization producing fundraiser concerts.

After earning a Yale School of Drama theater administration M.F. A. he was assistant to the m. d. of Baltimore’s Center Stage, assistant m. d. of Boston’s Huntington Theater Company, and associate g. m. of Yale Repertory Theater. Most recently he was product manager in charge of Rosco Laboratories’ fog machine division.

Chance leaves the Portland company at the end of the current season to pursue other opportunities.
