Waterfront Properties

Designer Eugene Lee will have his third spectacular waterfront set on the boards this season when “On the Waterfront” opens May 1 at the Brooks Atkinson. The first was “Two Gentlemen of Verona” last summer in Central Park for director Adrian Hall; that was followed, of course, by “Show Boat” for Hal Prince.

Now “Waterfront” looks set to come in (though not with David Caruso, as was once rumored). The $2.5 million production will feature Ron Eldard, Penelope Ann Miller, Kevin Conway and Terry Kinney, under Gordon Edelstein’s direction, with costumes by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting by Peter Kaczorowski and music by Wynton Marsalis.

Principal producers are Mitchell Maxwell, Victoria Maxwell, and Dan Markley. Mitchell Maxwell says the $2.5 million includes a $500,000 reserve, and that ticket prices will probably top out at $55, perhaps going up to $60 on weekends. Look for previews to begin around April 10.

“I believe we’re going to create an event on Broadway,” he said. At least, that’s the plan.
