There’s been brisk box office, as well, for the Royal National Theater revival of “A Little Night Music,” with 60% of the first booking period sold and previews still two weeks away. (The actual box office figure is upwards of $400,000.) Already, Sean Mathias’ musical directing debut is expected to extend its repertory engagement in the Olivier through next March.

Admirers of Mathias’ work on “Les Parents Terribles” (a.k.a. “Indiscretions”) and “Design for Living” may well wonder whether the director will deconstruct Sondheim as he earlier did Noel Coward and Jean Cocteau.

“I’m approaching this in exactly the same fashion,” says Mathias, adding, “I didn’t know I had turned ‘Design for Living’ inside out until everyone said I had. I’m the least conceptualist person working in the theater today.”
