Oz art org taps 15 groups for grants

Fifteen of Australia’s leading performing arts companies will receive triennial grants from the Australia Council for the Arts, which last month created a new board to fund large-scale drama, dance and music bodies (Variety, April 24-30).

According to federal arts minister Michael Lee’s May 31 announcement, organizations in line for coin from the Major Organizations Board include the Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Playbox and Black Swan theater companies, Sydney Dance Company, Australian Dance Theater and Australian Ballet. Also on the list is the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, which receives a special A$2.5 million to allow it more independence from pubcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Lee said, “The companies were selected on the basis of their national significance and financial viability; they are considered a vital part of the nation’s cultural life.”
