The selection of screen-saver images is configurable: Select all cartoons or covers, select the Girls Next Door or High Heels, or let the program select for you.

Playboy’s new entry offers more than 400 photographs and illustrations; a different centerfold, calendar girl, magazine cover or cartoon every 10 seconds of idle PC time and the software installation is painless. The selection of screen-saver images is configurable: Select all cartoons or covers, select the Girls Next Door or High Heels, or let the program select for you.

The video clips, the sort of thing seen on Playboy’s pay-per-view cable channel, are a disappointment. The images suffer from the technical problems of PC video: Compression artifacts obscure and distort the somewhat jerky images.

The worst part however, is the way in which the insipid, uninspired content of these audio/video clips reflects on the Playboy of today, a declining cultural icon, huckstering soft-core next to QVC, stripped of the intellectual and cultural aspirations that made Playboy what it once was.
