Verneuil replaces Kieslowski

The key role of Young Cinema Competition Jury chairman will be filled by French director Henri Verneuil. He steps in for acclaimed Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski, who is recovering from a heart attack and had to withdraw from the festival.

Verneuil will have a great responsibility because the category awards the most lucrative prizes on the film festival circuit.

A previous collaborator with Kieslowski, producer-director-writer Marin Karmitz, who produced Kieslowski’s famous three-color trilogy, is on the jury, which also includes two prominent thespians, actress Vivian Wu and actor Timothy Dalton.

The final jury member is well-known Japanese film critic and author Sahoko Hata.

The jury will screen and deliberate upon 12 films from first-time and young directors. Under the guidance of Kieslowski, the jury will decide the winners of the lucrative Gold, Silver, and Bronze prizes – worth $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
