It was filmgoing weather across Europe, resulting in a buoyant box office.
“Disclosure” was the front-runner in Germany and other far-flung territories such as Australia and Taiwan. By the end of its third week, some 1.6 million Germans, lured by a sexy campaign, have paid $11.5 million; all told, in seven European territories, the film has taken $17.7 million. Italy has contributed $7.5 million of that sum since mid-December and this week the film goes wide there. Taiwan has posted $4.2 million since year’s end and Korea $1.7 million in 11 days. By the end of the second week in Oz, the Michael Douglas-Demi Moore potboiler had done $3.3 million. Foreign receipts stand at $28.6 million with a number of major territories still to open.
Overall, Japan’s attendances were still showing the effects of the Kobe quake, but moviegoers were turning out for such pix as “Speed,” which did $1.9 million last weekend, pushing the local cume close to $50 million. Internationally it’s posted $188 million.
“Interview With the Vampire” opened strong in the U.K. with six days logging $5.4 million. In France, in just over a month, it has cumed $9 million, Australia contributed $6.6 million in four weeks and Spain and Italy pitched in about $7.4 million each since mid-December. Germany, by the end of the eighth, tendered close to $10 million. With only relatively minor markets remaining, the Neil Jordan vamper looks to suck in more than $100 million from foreign veins.
Also big in Britain is “Stargate,” which had a $2.2 million weekend on 324 screens, pushing the 18-day cume to $7.5 million. Italy also likes the time-traveling tale, with 78 screens averaging $23,085 (double the nearest rival) for a $1.8 million cume in the first four days – a good start for Mediaset, the new Filmvest distribbery. It was boosted by a stellar promotional launch across the conglom’s range of electronic media outlets and backed by big spending on print and billboards. Spain’s eighth week pushed the cume past $5 million, bringing worldwide box office to $22,988,386 at midweek.
“Stargate’s” high-pressure Italian opening cut into other business in the country, with Kurt Russell putting major dents in Jean-Claude Van Damme’s “Timecop,” which averaged $10,601 at 35, and Buena Vista Intl.’s “Terminal Velocity,” which hit with a thud, taking only $125,000 on 33.
However, things could be brighter for the Charlie Sheen actioner when Japan, Germany, Australia and five other territories report their Jan. 28 opening figures. Thus far, Korea has been the most receptive market, taking $2.6 million in eight weeks on three screens. Total foreign cume was $8.8 million at week’s end.
Other sources of BVI coin are the U.K.’s devotion to “Pulp Fiction,” which is now worth $15.8 million, plus another $3.1 million from Germany, with Latin America set to open this week. Then, of course, BVI’s got the one about the young lion, which is pulling in around $2 million a day: The tally on “The Lion King” was $404,072,000 the last time Disney looked.
The outstanding openings of “Baby’s Day Out” in Brazil and Argentina held into the second weekend when Latinos turned out to spend $577,621 at 84 (giving it a Brazilian cume of $2.2 million) and 72,916 at 22 (cume: $400,250).
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s baby, “Junior,” had a $247,000 birthday in France, while in the U.K. after 48 days the little blighter has grown to more than $7 million. Its weight in Germany at six weeks is $6.2 million, while in Japan it’s swelled up to nearly $12 million. Foreign cume is $46,597,870.
Even without the latest French and Latin American results, “Forrest Gump” has passed the $204 million mark and, according to exhibs, looks good for a lot more when the Oscar votes are tallied.
