“Speed” helmer Jan De Bont has officially sealed his deal to direct Michael and Anne-Marie Crichton’s tornado thriller “Twister” for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros./Universal Pictures. Bill Paxton (“Apollo 13”) is also expected to take the male lead, sources confirmed.
De Bont’s deal is said to be extremely lucrative. Some sources said he will receive between $2 million and $3 million upfront, with backend participation that includes both the merchandising and soundtrack.
With Paxton likely as one of the leads in the film, it’s clear Amblin is going the “Jurassic Park” route, relying heavily on special effects rather than star power to engage the audience.
Industrial Light & Magic is doing the special effects.
