Kevin Costner will follow the sci-fi actioner “Waterworld” with a romantic comedy.
The actor committed to New Regency’s “Tin Cup” with Ron Shelton at the helm for Warner Bros., sources said. The move returns Costner to a genre of film he hasn’t done since Shelton and he teamed on “Bull Durham” a major box office success in 1988.
“Tin Cup,” which was scripted by John Norville with a rewrite by Shelton from a story by Shelton and Norville, is set in the world of golf and centers on a driving range pro from Laredo, Texas. The project, which may undergo a name change, was one of two that the actor was contemplating before the Memorial Day weekend.
Insiders said the film is scheduled for a Sept. 15 start, and WB plans a summer ’96 bow. Shelton and Gary Foster will produce with New Regency.
