Two giants of the post-production world, Silicon Graphics and Avid Technology, have formed an alliance to develop and market digital editing products.

The companies will aggressively target the online film-editing market.

Computer maker SGI has made its mark in high-end digital effects, while Avids are widely used for random-access, nonlinear offline editing.

The alliance could help lower costs of high-end editing and move it out of editing rooms and onto the desktop.
